Composting is nature's way of recycling and can be done in your backyard! However, keep the compost clean and up to code. View City Code Chapter 46 Section 46-50 to learn more.
Do's and Don'ts of Backyard Composting:
- Do compost leaves, grass clippings, straw, non-woody and woody plant trimmings, sawdust, raw fruit and vegetable scraps, dry eggshells, tea bags, and coffee grounds.
- Do not compost meat, bones, greases, eggs, dairy products, whole or partial animals, feces, or inorganic materials such as rock, plastics, or synthetic fibers.
- Do store compost in a fully confined fenced area or enclosed structure.
- Do not store compost within 25 feet of any body of water or area designated as a floodplain, shoreland, or state-protected wetlands.
- Do keep a compost area in the backyard, at least five feet from any side or rear lot line and no closer than 20 feet from any dwelling unit located on adjacent property.
- Do not exceed five cubic yards in volume or five feet in height.
